3 Deaths: Interpreting Tarot
Welcome to 3 Cards. Each month I take three tarot cards and look at how different decks bring in different meanings. That’s one of the things I love about tarot is how the creators play with themes and variations and we aim to explore that in this series.
This is a card that can make or break a deck for me. It is one that I look at before buying a deck. It is also one of the of crap cards. People don’t like to see this card pop up in their lives. The unknown is scary but Death invites us to find out what is beyond what we know and what we think. It is a card of change and the more you embrace what Death offers the easier it will get.
Death
Animalis Os Fortuna
This deck focuses on the transformative aspects of this card in the tarot it helps take away some of the negative connotations that it can have for people. This deck features a butterfly emerging from its cocoon. It has changed its state of being and is now something completely different. Death is a card of rebirth and the Animalis highlights this and makes you feel good about it. Yes there is a struggle to emerge but for me this Death card is very gentle.
Thought Prompt
What transformation is happening in your life? Are you letting it happen or trying to shut it down?
Death
Mythic Tarot the 80’s version
Oh yeah, hey there Hades, can we go to the nice part of the Underworld? That’s what those little peeps are trying to do. There is more of a proper challenge issued here. Hades is ready to take what offerings you give him but it may not get what you expect in return. He’s here as a gate keeper between the worlds. Not everyone gets in, not everyone gets what they want it is a reminder that you are constantly changing and you need to check in and make sure that change is the one you want.
Thought Prompt
Are you working from a quid pro quo model of change? If I give up this can I have this? How can you let this process just happen and not control it so much?
Transformation
Starchild Akashic Tarot
This card deviates from traditional tarot with its word choice of Transformation which takes it out of the realm of “clay like corpses” and into a different paradigm of epiphany or downloads. It emphasizes the knowing aspect for me. It encourages you to listen to what is coming to you in various ways. This includes your own knowledge and intuition. That transformations can start on all levels and change us and yes some will be external and other parts internal. It encourages you to explore what’s there and come to understand it.
Thought Prompt
What is coming to you that you are ignoring? How can you accept what you know without knowing why? What are your signs?
